Bio:

Valag Baenre is a tall, stocky drow dressed in black leather and a fine shirt of blackened mithril links (counts as leather). His features are usually concealed under a leather hood, for his face is badly scarred and his forehead is branded with the rune of apostasy. He is an exile from the city of Kazzoberranzen, and marked for death should he ever return. Indeed, any true Lolth-worshipping drow seeing that rune would kill him on sight, given the means and opportunity. When he must present his face to the world he wears a skullcap pulled down to his eyebrows.

Valag is a younger son of a minor branch of the powerful Baenre family and was a tunnel-warden before his exile. It was his responsibility to oversee the caverns surrounding the city and keep them clear of vermin and other undesirable creatures. It was a good job—it allowed him to get out of the city. Life within the city was oppressive and stifling; Kazzoberranzen was a stronghold of the Lolth priesthood, essentially a totalitarian theocracy. Valag hated living under the thumb of the matriarchy, and of his own mother and grandmother in particular, so he spent as little time in the city as possible.

During his ranging in the shallows, he discovered a ruined shrine to some alien god, perhaps centuries or millenia old, that had been sunken during some forgotten earthquake. Little remained of the shrine except a few fragmented columns, but among the rubble he found a small marble statue, remarkably persevered. The statue depicted a woman with a serene expression and was partially buried so it could not be removed without destroying it. Being near it brought Valag a sense of peace—it was entirely unlike the cold, domineering depictions of Lolth. He began to spend more time in the shrine, whenever he could get away from his duties or arrange his patrols to bring him near the vicinity. Unfortunately, in the surveillance society of Kazzoberranzen, his behavior did not go unnoticed. Despite his caution, one day he was followed to the shrine and found meditating before the statue.

He returned to the city unaware and was immediately arrested by his mother, but managed to escape and make his way to the shallows. As he passed Glutton’s Teeth he was captured by slavers of Torog, but won his freedom when a group of surface-dwellers ambushed the slavers.
